On August 12, 2012, the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) published in the Federal Register (77 Fed. Reg. 50505, Aug. 21, 2012, available at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-08-21/pdf/2012-20521.pdf) an official request for public nominations for experts for a hydraulic fracturing advisory panel. Specifically, SAB is seeking technical experts to form an ad hoc panel to review and provide comments on EPA’s research, Potential Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing on Drinking Water. (Additional information on EPA’s research is available at http://www.epa.gov/hfstudy/index.html.) Both the progress report for this research, expected to be released in December 2012, and the final results, expected in 2014, will be reviewed by the SAB ad hoc panel. EPA will use the advice given by SAB’s ad hoc panel in the development of the results of the research. The nomination notification indicates that the SAB ad hoc panel may provide advice and technical review on issues related to hydraulic fracturing.
